Frequently
Asked Questions
How
often should my heating system be cleaned?
Rather
than using a time period to judge the need for an oil system
tune up, it's better to use oil usage as a guide.
Typically after a system has burned through 700-800 gallons of
heating oil the "oil side" of the system is ready
for cleaning.
Many
of our customers clean their systems yearly because they use
700 gallons or more in a 12 month period.
Why
is my hot water in the sinks and shower not hot enough? I
have a baseboard heating system.
If
your boiler is using a 'tankless coil' the termpering valve on
the coil may need adjustment or replacement.
Should
I use an oil additive in my oil tank?
Not
necessarily. Some additives only work for a short time
to get your through a very cold week in the winter. Some
types of additives are meant to be added at every fill up to
prevent sludge build up. These types are helpful in
adding life to the tank and keeping the system components
clean.
Why
does my heating system sound loud when it starts (bangs or
smokes)?
Your
system needs service.
What
can I do if my insurance company tells me that I cannot use my
woodstove in the same chimney as my furnace?
This
is a tough situation for most homeowners. Typically
there are three solutions:
*
Power vent the furnace through a wall in the basement
*
Switch to a new direct vent system, or
*
Remove woodstove from flue -- only use the furnace for heat.
